Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage on almost any iPhone and the same culprit sits at the top: video. Photos are measured in single-digit megabytes; a minute of modern video is measured in hundreds. If your storage keeps filling up no matter how many apps you delete, learning to compress video on iPhone — and to record smaller video in the first place — is the highest-leverage fix available.
The other common trigger is sharing: a two-minute clip that's too big to email or that chews through your mobile data on upload. Either way, the toolkit is the same, and most of it is already on your phone. Here are the four methods that actually work, from free built-in settings to dedicated compressor apps.

Why video eats so much storage

Read that last row again: ten minutes of 4K/60 is about 4 GB — the size of a large game — from one soccer match. Compression attacks this from two directions: recording smaller files going forward, and shrinking the videos you already have.
Method 1: Fix it at the source — recording settings
The cheapest gigabytes are the ones you never record. Two settings matter:
- Open Settings > Camera > Record Video.
- Pick a sensible default. 1080p HD at 30 fps is the sweet spot for everyday clips — it looks great on a phone or TV at roughly a seventh the size of 4K/60. Save 4K for footage you genuinely plan to edit or keep forever.
- Go back to Settings > Camera > Formats and select High Efficiency. This records in HEVC (H.265), which stores the same quality in significantly less space than the older "Most Compatible" H.264 option. Apple explains the formats in its HEIF and HEVC overview.
That's it — every video from now on is dramatically smaller, with no extra effort. Nothing here shrinks existing footage, though; for that, read on.
Method 2: Let iCloud lighten the load on your device
Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > Optimize iPhone Storage keeps full-resolution originals in iCloud Photos while your phone holds lightweight, device-sized versions. When storage runs low, iOS quietly swaps big local files for the small ones.
Be clear about what this is: it is offloading, not compression. The originals still exist at full size — they're just in iCloud, counting against your iCloud plan instead of your phone. Most video libraries won't fit in the free 5 GB tier, so this route usually means a paid subscription. It's the right answer for "my phone is full but I want to keep everything"; it's not the answer for "make these files smaller."
Method 3: The free built-in way — Shortcuts
The Shortcuts app (preinstalled on recent iOS versions) can re-encode any video, no third-party apps required. A minimal compression shortcut:
- Open Shortcuts, tap + to create a new shortcut.
- Add the action Select Photos and enable Select Multiple in its options.
- Add the action Encode Media. Expand its options and set a size such as 1080p; leave the format as HEVC for the smallest files.
- Add the action Save to Photo Album.
- Name it something like "Compress Video," run it, and pick your videos.
The compressed copies land in your library, typically at a fraction of the original size. Two catches worth knowing. First, the shortcut copies rather than replaces — the full-size original is still there until you delete it (and then sits in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days). Method 4: Use a compressor app — including our own
If you'd rather not manage shortcuts and duplicate files, a dedicated app streamlines the whole loop. Full disclosure: this is the category our own app plays in. What compression won't do
A little honesty prevents regret later. Compression is lossy — a well-compressed 1080p file looks nearly identical on a phone screen, but you cannot get the discarded detail back, and heavy compression shows up as softness or blockiness in fast motion. Compression also can't bypass iOS safeguards: deleted originals still spend up to 30 days in Recently Deleted before the space returns. And no compressor fixes a library full of videos you'll never watch — sometimes the best compression ratio is the delete button.
