How to choose a finder
Three questions filter the field quickly:
1. Where does the scan happen? This is the big one. On-device scanning means the app analyzes photos locally and your library never leaves your phone — better for privacy, no upload wait, works offline. Cloud-based scanning uploads your photos (or data derived from them) to a server. That's not automatically sinister, but it means trusting the vendor with your entire camera roll; read the privacy policy and decide deliberately. 2. Does it group similar photos or only exact copies? If it's exact-only, it duplicates what your phone already does free. Similarity grouping is the feature you're actually shopping for.

Any tool promising fully automatic deletion with no review is optimizing for a satisfying number, not for your photos. The universal workflow: scan → review → keep → delete → empty
Whatever finder you use, the same five-step session applies.
1. Scan
Run the scan with your phone charged or plugged in — perceptual hashing over thousands of photos is real work. Note the scan's scope: some finders scan everything, others focus on recent photos (our own app covers roughly the most recent 5,000). Scope limits are fine — recent months are where retakes concentrate — but know what was and wasn't scanned before concluding you're "clean."
2. Review the groups — actually look
The finder presents groups of matched photos, usually with a suggested keeper pre-selected. The suggestion is typically based on measurable quality: sharpness, resolution, exposure. It's right most of the time — and wrong exactly when it matters, because the algorithm can't know that the slightly blurrier frame is the one where your kid is actually smiling. Give each group two seconds of real attention. Two seconds times a hundred groups is three minutes; a deleted irreplaceable photo is forever.
3. Pick keepers deliberately
Per group, your options are: accept the suggested keeper, swap the selection to a different frame, keep more than one (a group of "similar" vacation shots might be three photos you genuinely want), or skip the group entirely. Skipping is a feature, not a failure — decisiveness on the easy groups beats agonizing over the hard ones. You can always rescan later.
4. Batch-delete once
Good finders queue everything and delete in one confirmed batch at the end, rather than interrupting you per photo. One confirmation, one operation, done.
5. Empty the trash
The step everyone forgets: deleted photos go to Recently Deleted (iOS/iPadOS, 30 days) or your gallery's trash (Android, typically 30–60 days) and keep occupying storage until they're purged. If tonight's goal is free space, open that folder and empty it. If you'd rather keep the safety net, wait — the space arrives when the countdown ends.
Settings that actually matter
Most finder settings are cosmetic. These three change outcomes:
- Similarity threshold. The strictness of matching. Tight = only near-identical shots group together (few false positives, misses looser retakes). Loose = more aggressive grouping (finds more, but starts clustering photos that are merely related). If your finder exposes this, start strict for your first session, then loosen once you trust the review flow.
- Scan scope. All photos versus recent ones; whether videos and screenshots are included. Match it to your goal — a storage emergency wants large files and videos included; a tidiness pass might be photos only.
- What "keep" means. Check whether the app deletes through the system trash (recoverable) or claims permanent deletion. Prefer the trash route, always.
